One of the things I like about computers is the ability to assign long blocks of regularly used text to an individual function key or code. Hit the key and all the verbiage appears instantly. One of the things I don’t like about some customer service reps nowadays is their spewing of long blocks of generic responses when I accidentally use a verbal keystroke or code word that triggers their autopilot “service” mode.

In recent days two major news stories confirmed for me that managing pace is one of the most significant leadership challenges in the years ahead. Both the Don Imus story and the dismissal of charges against the Duke lacrosse players are complex events with many layers of meaning. I am only writing about one: timing and pacing. Whether it be due to our 24-hour newscycle or other factors, the rush to judgment seems like a more pervasive and prevalent risk.

When I was in graduate school, one of my professional role models, Dr. Sara Boatman, wrote a powerful essay entitled "Too Much of a Good Thing is Still Too Much." I always likened the concept to that horrible brain pain you get when you eat too much ice cream too quickly. So much of our American identity is tied to consumption and abundance: the more you have the better off you are.

For 13 years I have lived comfortably in this wonderful home nestled in a historic district just off the hustle and bustle of downtown Indianapolis. Last week I purchased a new home and put the only house I have ever owned on the market. I wasn't looking for a new home, but as when I purchased this house, I stumbled on to what seems like the right house at the right price at the right time, so I bit and bought.

Robert (name changed to protect the guilty) always double-bags the groceries at the store where I shop. Paper or plastic doesn't make any difference to him, it is always a 2 for 1 bagging extravaganza. I generally bring my own bags, but on the rare days when I forget, I always tell Robert to single-bag my items. The consternation on his face is significant, and I can tell he doesn't like me throwing off his system.

So much of what still transpires in training sessions, workshops, and major conferences fails to reflect what we have long known about adult learning and basic human nature. Logistics trump learning far too often. In the April 2007 issue of Association Meetings , writer Dave Kovaleski tackles this reality head-on in a piece entitled Education Grows Up.
