I recently read Trevor Owens’ book, Designing Online Communities , which looks at the design process for web communities from a cross-disciplinary perspective. He discusses how psychology, sociology, history, linguistics and other fields of study can influence and inform our thinking about online communities. Owens showcased the value of taking time to think about and develop a language for an online community.
Direct mail often doesn’t get the respect it deserves these days, but it’s a significantly more effective medium than digital tools like email or social media. And it’s getting more interactive, too. It’s way cheaper to send out another email or social ad than it is to go to all the trouble of physically printing something out and delivering it through the mail.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

Lewis and I are both going to take a crack at this topic, and I’ve elected to go first. I see partnership and membership as being founded on the same broad idea: individuals or organizations that seek some type of a relationship with an association. Whether they are individuals, companies, or other types of institutions, they have problems they can’t solve, or goals they can’t achieve, all on their own.

Here’s a fun forecast: The number of mobile users worldwide is expected to reach 7.26 billion in 2020. With (nearly) the entire human population walking around with a mobile device in their pocket, it should come as no surprise that people expect a certain level of connectivity in their experiences. Businesses can tap into this potential with a mobile app for their events.
I recently attended a webinar on mentoring and induction programs for new PK-12 teachers. A survey popped up at the end and among the questions was this feedback form favorite – “What did you learn?” I answered honestly, “I learned strategies for mentoring and new teacher induction.”. Feedback Survey Fails. Most adult learning sessions, whether conducted in-person or online, include participant feedback surveys.

Late Breaking News. Members Hire Constant Transformation. Bringing in new business is and always will be important. However, marketing doesn’t end when the ink is dry on the contract. Where are you focusing your efforts after that initial sale? Your new customers shouldn’t disappear into a black hole, never to hear from you again – that initial transaction should be the start of their defined customer journey, complete with strategic touchpoints for success.
In the spring of 2018, I had the opportunity to attend one of my favorite conferences in the association year: digitalNOW. At that event, among all the cutting-edge content, I heard one word over and over: blockchain. Two things quickly became apparent to me: one, it was an emerging trend associations should pay attention to and two, nobody seemed to really understand it all that well.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

Which begs the question…what took so long? It’s simple. Without customers, you don’t have a business. Without happy customers, you don’t have a successful, profitable, sustainable business. For B2B Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies, investing in customer success isn’t optional – or, at least it shouldn’t be, at this stage in the game. Most modern-day SaaS platforms utilize a subscription-based model, which means that you have to win your customers over time and time again in the form of sub
Consensus is a collaborative process by which decisions are made based on overwhelming agreement of a group. Ultimately a decision by consensus is one that everyone supports (or can live with). Associations are groups of people or companies with similar interests or in similar professions or industries. Even though bylaws and rules of order typically set numerical requirements for voting, associations by their very nature must make many decisions through a consensus process because there isn’t o

This week I spoke to leaders from a group of contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers about both culture and employee engagement. In the afternoon session, I was part of a panel that went for two hours (!), so it allowed for some interesting and more in-depth conversations. At one point, the topic of “core values” came up, and I went on my usual rant about how much of a problem I think core values can be—particularly when they end up as empty promises up on the wall, not reflecting real behavio
Once upon a time, during the initial rise of social media platforms and online communities , people were aflutter about what these new developments would mean for their business. The term “social” seemed to compound every business buzzword, making it difficult to understand what a social business really looks like. In today’s world, the social business model has become an expectation, rather than a new idea.

At it’s most basic level, blockchain is a ledger-style database. “Wait a second!” you might say. “There are PLENTY of database options out there. Why do we need ANOTHER one?” Blockchain allows two people who don’t know or trust each other to exchange value over the internet without the involvement of a third party.
