Amanda Kaiser at her Smooth the Path blog gave me a good reminder this week about association membership dues notices. The most interesting result from the member research on renewal notices is that these letters, emails, and phone calls do not serve to change most member’s minds about renewing. Instead, renewal notices merely remind them to renew. The decision to renew is made far ahead of the renewal period.

Think of your database, your AMS, as the center of a wheel. When you integrate your AMS with your online community platform, the community becomes a spoke on that wheel. Your marketing automation software becomes another spoke on that wheel. Your AMS feeds these platforms data, and the platforms feed it right back with even more specialized data. It all makes the wheel turn.

At #ASAE18, leaders spoke openly about the numerous challenges of leading through change. Communication, candor, and a party or two can help. Making big changes at an organization starts at the top. But leaders need to spend more time considering how change plays out at the middle and lower levels as well. That was one of the takeaways of one of the strongest and most challenging Learning Labs I attended at last week’s ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition.

Being an insurance broker at the ASAE 2018 annual conference, I was drawn to the Express Talk on Cybersecurity Risk Management to see what the speakers would have to say on the subject. In my experience, a lot of nonprofits and associations are under the assumption that a cyberattack or cyber breach cannot happen to them – or even affect them. I can assure them that this thought process is very far from the truth, being in insurance and dealing with cyber policies daily.

This Spring we hauled all of our house plants outside to the picnic table and repotted them. A few plants were very overdue for some attention and had become potbound. You may be familiar with this phenomena, the roots of the plant grow so much that when you pull the plant out of the pot the roots themselves keep the pot shape. Many plants do not like being pot bound.

A recent study says people with visible tattoos have less trouble finding a good job than they used to, but another suggests that some employers still take an old-school view. For generations, conventional wisdom said that visible tattoos and professional work environments don’t mix. But the conventional wisdom may be changing. At least one recent study found that tattoos that can’t be hidden behind clothing are no longer a deterrent to finding a job.

Three years ago a membership manager wrote a warm welcome letter for all new members to receive. This letter explained the benefits of being a member and how to get involved. After a bit of deliberation, the staff felt the letter would be more effective if the Executive Director signed it. About four months ago, the membership manager decided to forgo the cost of the mailed letter and converted the letter to an email.
