The biggest problem with most annual conferences is that most members cannot go. The conference conflicts with other things on their schedule. What percent of your members make it to the conference each year? Which means that 70 to 90 percent of our members do not experience one of the top benefits the association has to offer.

To protect the anonymity of this association I can’t tell you everything we learned but I can tell you about a few of the key insights gained: Influence is a key challenge for members – members worried about their ability to influence stakeholders and like most professionals this is becoming a more important part of their job.
Or we can use last year’s attendee feedback to make this year’s conference a bit better. If you work for an association that is defined by what it provides: articles, research, the conference; the association may be too heavily focused on optimization. Optimization must be balanced by innovation.
It is called, “yes, and” Anytime someone says something to you, even something you disagree with, say aloud, or say in your mind “yes, and” “I did not get a lot of value out of this year’s speaker line up” [Yes, and] “was there a problem you came to the conference hoping to solve?”
Or the association is moving too slowly or is filled with old-school thinking, while they want to explore new ideas. When they start skipping your conference’s sessions and spend all their time hanging out on the periphery of the conference chatting with old friends. They stop renewing on time.
So the downward trend was already there, and then the pandemic hit, and conferences moved to virtual. The awkward execution was totally natural because 2020 was our first experience with virtual conferences. Virtual expo halls and sponsorship 1.0
Just starting to gain steam are conferences for freelancers and entrepreneurs that bring together all the elements of a good life including sound business practices with sound health and wellness practices. In these conferences a how-to-rapidly-innovate session can live right next to a how-to-perform-radical-self-care session.
They look to the association first when they have a question, they easily articulate the value they get from the association, they distinctly remember the value they got when they first joined, and they aspire to engage more, whether that means attending the annual conference or becoming a volunteer someday.

Having a single value proposition is dangerous because when some members don’t love the latest version, their perception of value slips away. Do you have a sense that too much is riding on the next annual conference, board meeting, or even email? See if you can think of ways to spread out the value members receive.

We need strategic thinkers, advocates, promoters, people at the conference to create energy, writers, speakers, and mentors.
