What a cool story this blogger has to tell about their grandfather and the 20 Mantras of Great Leaders he developed through a business and teaching career. Read the full post here. I think my three favorite (maybe the ones I connect best with) are: 1.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

Andrea’s been a volunteer with ASAE’s research committee, which supports the work of the ASAE Foundation, and we specifically got talking about the Future of Membership project.

'A rebrand for a membership organisation can be an important part of a new strategic direction. It can revitalise the organisation and engage members and potential members. However, it can also raise questions in members’ minds – ‘What did that cost?’ and ‘Why do we need that?’, so it was good to see how the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) approached it recently.

'NBA great and Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley once famously said, “I am not a role model” I like Sir Charles and even can understand his point to a certain extent – I think he was trying to let parents and teachers know that they have daily interactions with children and should be their role models. Unfortunately, Charles was wrong and so are many leaders.

A: I try not to make the same old resolutions like “lose weight,” “get organized,” etc. If I make a New Year resolution, it has to be specific, the timing has to be right and the goal has to be realistic, as well as measurable.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

'It’s not a random collection of your “best” people. We tend to think that putting the smartest, most capable people together on a team is the best decision, but some research I saw reported in the New York Times says otherwise. High IQs of team members was not a predictor of team success. Their study of effective teams identified three characteristics that made some teams generally “smarter” than others: Equal participation.

'Many times leaders are presented with ideas by their teammates. How they respond to these ideas separates the good leaders from the bad leaders. Think for a minute about how you responded the last time an idea was presented to you by one of your teammates. Did you keep a positive look on your face or a negative one? Were you enthusiastic or dejected?

'A new year means new professional development opportunities. Admittedly, I’m a PD nerd. So I’ve been excitedly surfing the web for all things writing, media relations and public relations. But if I have to pick, I’m going to choose an event hosted in a hotel with comfy beds, free Wi-Fi, probably a restaurant….and the list goes on. Thanks to PD nerds like me, in 2015 hotels should get a big financial boost.

'On the last day of 2014, I made the mistake of getting a prescription filled. I didn’t intend to do it that day. That just happened to be the day I went to the doctor and he called it in to my local CVS. I showed up at the pharmacy a good six hours after it was called in, and waited in a line that was much longer than usual. The person in front of me was upset that her Rx wasn’t ready (though she had called hers in after mine).

At the beginning of 2014 we started a conversation on the importance of a career center strategy for associations, especially in light of social networking giant LinkedIn’s aggressive efforts to become the leading online job board aggregator. The concern we saw wasn’t specifically that LinkedIn was moving into the job board space but more so about their overall strategy for creating higher levels of engagement with job seekers and employers.
