My Favorite 30 Americans

Reid All About it

The 30 Americans exhibition enters its third week at the North Carolina Museum of Art. I visited it on opening day after attending a museum-hosted debate about: Can there be such a thing as truly black art? , a question I wrote about last week. The exhibition features 75 works of art from the Rubell Family Collection in Miami by 31 African American artists — 31, not 30, because there was a late addition.

A colleague recently forwarded an article to me from the New York Times titled, “Message to Executives: Stop Multitasking” I read the article with interest as I consider myself a multitasker. The Invisible Community

Reid All About it

Although I am a typical loner in my daily life, my awareness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty, and justice has prevented me from feelings of isolation. ~Albert Einstein, 1932, from What I Believe (or My Credo ) , a speech to the German League of Human Rights. If Einstein were around today, he’d blog, tweet and probably have a Facebook page too.

Have You Planned Your Exit Strategy?

Association Leaders

One of the many common traits of great leaders is they have a vision for their business and it includes a succession plan for themselves. They are positioning their business to succeed without them. Though many entrepreneurs are great leaders, some are not by nature – but they can be. To be great, however, entrepreneurs need to develop that exit strategy.

Inquiry or advocacy?

Golden's Rules for Association

There are two kinds of public policy research: there is inquiry and there is advocacy. In the case of advocacy, you start with an answer and go in search of the facts that will bolster and support your position. In the case of inquiry, you start with a question and let the facts lead you [.].

What laughter yoga can teach us about marketing

Optimist Consulting

I had the pleasure of attending my first Laughter Yoga session last week. The idea is that laughter – spontaneous or forced – is very good for us and we should do more. The session was organised and lead by the charismatic Jennifer, who also works as a personal change strategist (she wisely decided to move away and stand out from the “life coach” crowd).

Speaking Elsewhere: April 2011

Reid All About it

What do I do when I’m not writing? Every now and then I share what I know with others. Recently I did a few presentations that I thought I’d share with you too. Of course it’s not like the real deal when you get to experience my witty banter and stories. Consider this the Cliff Notes version. In March I went to Chicago to speak to a group of association volunteer leaders about creating and nurturing an online community – Community 2.0 – PowerPoint or PDF version with slide notes.

Us versus Them

Golden's Rules for Association

Have social networks made traditional associations obsolete? Or are Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn et. al. just so many distractions from real association work? In my view, the answer is neither. Recognition Powers High-Performance — If You Do it Right

Speaker: Radhika Samant and Todd Wuestenberg

Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.

Ask Different Questions

Reid All About it

“What keeps you up at night?” Its intention is good: discover what troubles people, their pain points, and try to address the underlying needs. But its roots are negative and focused on problem-solving instead of aspiration-pursuing. Jeffrey Cufaude wrote this in one of his Leadership Limerick posts, The Mojo of Motivation. His “aspiration-pursuing” idea stuck with me.

The beauty of being underestimated

Association Advocacy Chick

It’s neither comfortable nor pleasant, but at some point in our lives, we’ve all been underestimated. I routinely find myself in situations where the perception about my abilities don’t match the reality. I don’t look like the typical DC lobbyist. Heck, I don’t look like the typical association professional. However, I find that there’s a certain beauty to being what Merriam Webster defines as regard for being less than capable than they really are.
