The Controlled are Rarely Engaged

Idea Architects

I've facilitated many conversations lately with volunteers and staff members lamenting their inability to attract and engage a significant number of younger generation potential leaders. Their concern is admirable. Their desire to reach out is genuine. Unfortunately they continue to offer only the same involvement entry points and pathways that they themselves would find desirable.

The Eyes Have It

Idea Architects

The rapid rise of consumer -generated content and innovation fascinates me as I think we are just scratching the surface of its potential. Just as the Neighborhood Watch deputizes everyone's eyes as part of the local security force, these new efforts coopt everyone into being a citizen journalist, art director, film producer, and the like. It is hard to go through your day and not encounter one example of this phenomenon in action.

Time for Technology Petting Zoos

Idea Architects

Wall Street pundits weren’t thrilled with Steve Jobs when he decided to open Apple retail outlets. Now several years later, guess who has earned the rights to say “I told you so.” Seemingly risky, the stores were really no-brainers because of the value they offer: a beautifully designed retail environment where newbies and Apple fanatics alike can peacefully co-exist while playing with all of the latest gadgets.

Making the Strange Seem Familiar

Idea Architects

Here's a simple technology truth I think is worth considering. If you want someone to get on board with MP3 players and the technology seems foreign to them, simply extolling its virtues more might not do the trick. But when you offer the following continuum — record, 8-track, cassettes, compact disc, MP3 players — you've now put the new technology into a context they can more readily understand (and potentially accept and adopt).

Running for president is tough if you haven't been anointed as one of the likely heirs apparent. People don't want to donate money to a candidate that won't make it through the primaries. Being a third-party candidate in our primarily two-party system is tough in the actual election. People don't want to "waste" their votes when they only have one to cast.

Is That All You Have to Offer?

The most recent Ann Coulter controversy has reminded me once again of people who confuse sensationalism with success. It's easy to say outrageous things only to disappoint people once you've garnered their attention and they quick learn you have nothing remarkable to share. It's much more challenging to be consistently remarkable and patiently cultivate people's attention until they learn how sensational your efforts really are.
