We love our communities and members. For the most part, everyone participating is collegial, helpful and respectful—which is why members keep coming back, posting and collaborating with each other. Sometimes, there’s that one member (or maybe several) who provoke in conversations. Maybe the provocation is outright and obvious. Other times, it is subtler and nuanced, but gives you a bad feeling.

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with larynx cancer earlier this year. I had a small growth on my vocal chords that turned out to have some cancer in it. They removed the growth (while preserving my vocal chords, thank you very much) and this June I went through radiation treatment to make sure there was no cancer left in the system. I'm told that it's all gone now, and from here on out they'll just monitor me.

I've been on a number of member visits lately. What are member visits? That's when I and/or a member of my association staff get out of our office and visit one of our association members in their place of business. Invariably, these are well worth the time and expense it takes to organize and conduct them. They give us on-the-ground information about the world of our members and it facilitates greater loyalty between the member and the association.

I'm just back from the ASAE Annual meeting in Detroit. It's my 12th consecutive annual meeting. Over the years most of my clients have been associations, so this is obviously the place to be for me every year, though my participation at the meeting has certainly morphed since 2004. I attend fewer of the sessions these days and spend more time just talking to people in between or on the show floor or at the social events.
