Every year, when I register for the ASAE Annual Meeting, I check the box to receive emails from exhibitors. As a writer/marketer, I like seeing how vendors in my community use email marketing. Some of them do it well, but some, oh boy, they really blow it. The list ASAE provides to exhibitors includes association execs and staff as well as consultant members like myself.

While I was out of the office recently tending to some personal affairs, my husband commented on the number of “dings” from my iPhone. He was shocked when I explained that said “dings” indicated yet another email. When I returned, I had 400 emails. Really. After only three days. I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir, but I can’t keep my inbox clean. I operate three accounts regularly and they’re all suffering from inbox overload.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

Are associations taking a backwards approach to member engagement? Associations have always been “about” engagement of course, and in the past several years, we’ve had a renewed focus on engaging our audiences. The thing is, most of us aren’t really doing it well. Could that be because we’ve been thinking about engagement all wrong, focusing on what we want members to do and how we define value?

In an economy more driven by intellectual capital than ever before, executives actively seek information from multiple sources. Whether it be Greece’s Debt Crisis , market access concerns, or industries seeking new and more opportunistic markets, your members are “in the know” constantly. Is it more impactful to deploy an Association Loyalty Strategy or an Engagement Strategy?

It’s been a great week in Dayton, Ohio as I wrap up my time at the 2015 Ohio Association of Association Executives Annual Conference. And while there wasn’t a specific session on Learning Management Systems , I heard from a number of association executives asking questions about LMS’s and what they need do be doing for their associations regarding this technology.

We've all heard the mantra, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast," but is it true? What exactly is the relationship between culture and strategy? I have argued that they are two sides of the same coin and that culture should always be connected to what drives the success of the enterprise, but how integrated should the two be in terms of processes and systems?

Unfortunately, while we’ve been busily building and marketing the programs, products, and services we think our audiences might like, the world has changed. In 2015, customers are looking for more than a transaction; they’re looking for custom solutions that can be constructed only through authentic relationships of the type, duration, and intensity they—not you—want.

This post was originally published on the Switch and Shift blog. There’s a lot being written about organizational culture “eating strategy for lunch,” and I certainly understand the sentiment. Most of us have heard about companies who might have chosen a sound strategy, but watched it fall apart because a dysfunctional or even contradictory culture got in the way.

If you manage an association or standard-setting organization, there’s a good chance your governing board is dispersed across the country—or even across the globe. After all, most association board members are simultaneously leading separate businesses, and answering to the stakeholders in their respective offices/cities. Even the most dedicated among them would have a hard time attending all your board meetings, if participation always meant getting on a plane, losing a day’s work to travel, et

It’s summer…and that means planning season for many of you. Perhaps that planning includes whether to hire an intern for the upcoming year. And with that comes the question: “Should we pay them?”. In September 2013, I wrote a post about the Black Swan case, in which a federal judge ruled that Fox Searchlight Pictures violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying interns during the production of the 2010 movie “Black Swan.

Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Everyone wants the best talent. We hope that our salary and benefits packages are attractive enough to draw in the best people in for all of our positions, but if we face the facts, reality can be somewhat disappointing--most of us have competitors out there who have more resources available and more money to throw at the talent. Does this mean we need to cut costs in the organization to make room for more salaries in order to win this talent war?

When it comes to identifying topics for face-to-face and digital presentations, there are generally two schools of thought: Call for presentations; or. Content curation. In a traditional call for presentations, a general invitation is released to an organization’s key constituents to submit topic ideas for a program.

Presenters should be concerned about clock management when adding interaction to a session or talk. You can rehearse, time, edit, and somewhat control the pace of your speaking segments. This is not possible when you invite participants to engage with each other. Or is it? The timing of interactive elements is definitely manageable albeit less tightly than your speaking segments.
