Why Is Membership the Only Relationship?

Spark Consulting

'Way back in March at ASAE’s Great Ideas Conference, I had the opportunity to participate in an early morning conversation facilitated by Jeff de Cagna. Rob Barnes (at the time of Fitness Australia and now of Aptify) and Bob Rich (the American Chemical Society), Jeff and I debated the member relationship and, more specifically, why membership associations insist on behaving as if membership is the only relationship people can have with us.

Just two little words

Aaron Wolowiec

'Throughout the last couple weeks, my kids have been making cute turkeys. We made them in my daughter’s Daisy troop with pinecones and feathers. Then she made one at school and wrote for what and for whom she was thankful on each feather. Also at school, my boys wrote thank you poems and sang Thanksgiving songs. It touches me to hear how thankful they are for simple things like pouring their cereal, or as my daughter wrote, “my brothers and drinks, like pop.”.

A New Look At Running Grants & Programs: Why Use A System When You Have Excel?

Speaker: Gareth Webb & Phil Selley, Founding Partners at Intouch Business

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

Do Leaders Like Dissent?

Association Leaders

'I read an interesting article today. It was an interview with Bob Pittman, Chairman and CEO of Clear Channel Communications. You can read the article here. What I found interesting and valuable about the article was Mr. Pittman’s point of view on dissent and on making mistakes. I think many leaders think they are always right and certainly want to be right – after all some would think leaders don’t become leaders by failing right?

Always the Last to Know: Internet Everywhere

Spark Consulting

'One of the next advances in network technology experts are anticipating is the “ Internet of things.” The basic concept is that everyday objects will have small, low-power networked chips inside them that will allow them to interact directly with us and each other through the Internet to make life easier and more efficient. If you’ve ever seen a Nest thermostat (which learns) or used Nike+ to track your run you’ve seen the beginning of this concept at work.

Stop spamming your members

Aaron Wolowiec

'I’ve had the good fortune to work for and with associations my entire professional career. So it’s fair to say I understand and value association membership. That’s why I’m a card-carrying member of several professional societies. And while I join these organizations for very specific reasons (with very specific goals and outcomes in mind), it’s clear to me that at least one of them has no idea who I am.

Forecasting Failures Are Costly: Heres How To Fix Them

Speaker: Dave Sackett

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
