Stop Solving Problems

Idea Architects

Too often individuals in leadership positions see their job as solving problems for others instead of engaging others in problem solving. Our mayor recently made this error when announcing he was considering the possible sale of neighborhood pocket parks. Like many cities, Indianapolis faces some significant budget challenges. Our new mayor ran on a platform of reducing government expense and rightly is looking at every budget line for possible savings.

ASAE Annual Meeting – So Social

Guilt by Association

(My first post!). OK, the ASAE annual meeting ended almost a week ago … but I was on the beach in SD, so cut me a little slack, OK? Social media continues to be the major theme at these association meetings. Everyone – not just the techies – is trying to figure out how to do it right. But who really knows for sure? But as a speaker at last year’s ASAE conference said wisely, “Relax.

Are you aware that you've had two claims in the past two years? When this is the start of a phone call from your insurance agent, you know the conversation is going to go downhill. Well, of course, I'm aware. I'm the one who filed them. I'm also aware that these were for two different addresses (my old house and my new home), that one of them was for hail damage from a storm that affected almost 10% of Indianapolis, and that my only other claim came in 1996 and involved a payout of less than $

The Paradox : Off Stage

Off Stage

Off Stage. Aug. 21, 2008 - The Paradox. Not long ago, my good friend and Supreme Queen of Association Managers, Cindy Butts, blogged about a short training tape which she had watched called “The Abilene Paradox” She mentioned a few interesting points which piqued my interest—namely, that often leaders of groups agree with a variety of off-the-wall propositions just because they don’t want to offend anyone by expressing opposition.

The “Pfactor” and its Role in Association Change and Innovation

Association 20/20

There’s a quote I recently came across in that “Wisdom” boils down to the mastery of your ego as well as the ego of others. Many association professionals think that simply having the right answer or the most on-point innovation waiting in the wings will help advance and propel the organization forward. Unfortunately, as many of you may have already learned, this is perhaps less than half the battle.

He talked about how public relations professionals can still influence opinion and behavior even though mainstream media is in its death throes. Sadly, the session wasn’t recorded. But its content was too good to let it disappear. From my notes: PR professionals have to be the new influencers.

Off Stage. Aug. 23, 2008 - I'm from the IRS and I am here to help. One of the consulting projects Ive recently (almost) finished is the construction of a policy manual for a non-profit Realtor organization. Its a pretty good-sized manual (about 150 pages, all told), because the CEO of the association has spent a lot of years standardizing the practices in the association office, and even created some processes which are included in the policy manual as a way to add consistency to office func

The De-massification, De-centralization and Deconstruction of Association Participation

Association 20/20

In many ways, associations for years have operated with a limited set of entry points were members come together en mass, almost as a seemingly invitation-only pseudo private club of connected people pariticipating in broad mass-justifying topics. In the future, I believe associations who will build a strong future will do so by tearing the gates down and creating a broad variety of entry points for members, to keep participation from becoming an exercise in bottleneck traffic.
