With all the buzz about social media, it’s easy to forget that offline media attention can be equally valuable, especially for community-based nonprofits who want to get attention to local projects or recruit local members and volunteers. Offline media attention is good. Getting it can be hard, however, in the digital information age. Challenged by online alternative news sources, print newspapers are slimming down, cutting pages to cut their costs.
I believe that most successful trade associations have Boards of Directors that are not only functional but whose directors have developed trusting relationships amongst each other. I have had the pleasure of seeing dozens of Boards of Directors interact with each other. Here are some of my observations about how Boards develop trusting relationships: 1.

When I worked as Greek Affairs Coordinator at Iowa State University, one of the men's fraternities had a large chalkboard stationed just inside the entrance to the house. On it every Sunday, the chapter's House Manager posted a short list of "things that need to be done in/on the house this week." Current and future designs need to be simpler in one way (components, basic desks and tables) but more nuanced and tunable in others.
This week I started an intensive month-long coaching program for freelance writers who want to serve nonprofit clients.
