A consultant was hired, and after the training, someone said, “he was just doing it for the money. Once you see that you can’t unsee it.” There are many industries where it is not enough to be competent, colleagues and customers want to see caring too. Doctors and teachers, for example, we want them to care. We want doctors to care about making us healthy, and we want teachers to care about the growth of our kids.

If you're involved in community management, you've likely heard of the 90-9-1 principle. The numbers represent speculated percentages of online engagement, with 90 percent of participants only viewing content, 9 percent responding to content, and 1 percent actively participating in the creation of new content. When we set out last year to write The Non-Obvious Guide to Employee Engagement (which launches today!), our first task was to see what others were writing about the topic. And according to just about every article and blog post out there, engagement is "hard to define," and there are as many definitions out there as there are consultants—and that’s a lot.

As a kind of follow-up to last week's post on the differences between strategy development and strategy deployment (at least in the way that my association's Board are working to define those terms), I had another conversation on the same subject this week with another Board leader, and this one had a decidedly different feel to it. I was talking to this Board leader about a piece of our next meeting agenda that he was going to lead.
The American Association for Respiratory Care’s (AARC) membership was stalled. A flat line in the association’s core group of active members was even starting a bit of a downturn.
