I had lunch with a colleague this week and our conversation turned to staff bonus plans. In prefacing my description of the bonus plan I've put in place for the staff at my association, I described it (with a bit of tongue in the cheek) as "needlessly complicated." This, frankly, is based on some feedback I've received from my team. After explaining it to her, however, she said she didn't think it was complicated at all.

This morning a man in a hard hat was roaming around our neighborhood paying particular attention to the telephone poles. I asked him what they were doing with the telephone poles. “We have been inspecting and protecting the power poles from damage from rot, insects, and things like that,” he said. What the poles are called was an important enough distinction that he corrected my choice of words.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

Another similarity?

When I was appointed to my first CEO role in 2001 I had no idea how I was going to keep up with the demands. I had many direct reports, a Board of Directors to report to and everyone wanting a piece of you. There had to be a way to get control of what was going on in my life. I dug deep into learning ways to control my schedule and not let it control me.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

Are you dealing with member queries to the best of your ability? There are a few basic rules of member service that all associations should keep in mind. No matter the size of your budget or staff, what counts is how your members feel at the end of an interaction with the organization. All member interactions must focus on a positive experience that shows active listening (or active reading if it’s an email), attention to detail, and a demonstration that you (as staff) are making an effort.

If attendees critique a conference that you spent months carefully planning, it can be hard not to take it personally. The best way to handle it likely involves digging deeper into the negative feedback and then making room for improvement. For the past few weeks, I’ve been watching a lot of Top Chef. My observations from the cooking competition: Some chefs really like to use dashi, and making panna cotta usually doesn’t turn out well for contestants.
