Do Not Make New Members Feel Like We Only Want Their Money

Smooth The Path

Do you want to know what our members really hate? When we ask them for more money right after they join. I can empathize with our members. Recently, a colleague decided to raise money for a cause near and dear to his heart. I got an email asking if I would sponsor him in a race event. I grabbed my credit card and made a donation. The society hosting the race sent me a series of emails over the next 3 weeks.

Disclaimer: A real human wrote this post. Before you start backing away nervously, I know – these two concepts on their own can create stirrings of inner panic. And in a post together? The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community… Forget robots, keep your eye on old people —they’ll help companies thrive, says Tyler Cowen. No surprise. Many Boomers can’t afford to retire and they’ve got lots of wisdom and life experience yet to contribute. Because those Boomers will likely need to update their skills at some point, associations shouldn’t write them off any time soon.

Should Your Association Have a Podcast Channel?

Podcasts have become increasingly popular over the past decade and as a millennial I am going to give my insights as to why. Prefacing my opinions, I would like to talk about two studies I came across that revealed notable insights on U.S. citizens and podcasts. A Better Definition of Employee Engagement

Jamie Notter

I’ve been searching the web for a good definition of employee engagement, and I have to say, I’m disappointed. There are a LOT out there, though I think that is fine. Millennials Are Lazy?

Eric Lanke

Here's a rare post on the subject of generations in the workplace. Recent readers of this blog may not be aware that I cut my blogging teeth on the subject when I hosted (with Jamie Notter ) The Hourglass Blog from 2009 to 2012. There, the focus was primarily on Generation X, and our investigative question was primarily on whether and how members of that generation would step into positions of leadership in our society and its organizations as the swelled ranks of Boomers began leaving the workp

One Element of Being an Effective Association We Never Talk About: Approachability

My husband drove his 1969 Camero to work today. During the commute, someone in a car on the other side of the road yelled “NICE” at him. We have found this is not at all abnormal. In intersections, waiting at stop lights, and in parking lots, the car draws attention, and it makes us approachable. It is incredible how many pedestrians will chit-chat with us as they are walking by and we are waiting to pull out.

Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards.
