I have heard members say, “I felt very uncertain, even scared, about taking the next step in my career but, the association helped me be confident.” ” Or, “I was assigned a big project no one in our company had attempted but, I found help through the association.”
” “When you say the word innovation I worry that the projects will be too big and too risky. I worry about being the board president who killed the association.” ” “I am having a hard time finding information about this industry issue on your website.”
Members say networking helps them: Get the funding they need for world-changing projects. While the word “networking” strikes fear into many people’s hearts, the act of networking achieves a lot of good. Reignite their passion for their professional choices. Solve problems that make people’s lives better.
They are the only ones in their company, leading a new, never-been-done-before project. They are the only parent in their department with small children at home. They are the only person of their gender, age, ethnicity, or religious background. Find out what aspect of your member’s professional lives has them feeling most alone.
Email, meetings, and projects are all competing with associations. For associations to win their member’s money, attention, time, and effort we have to be great. But here’s the good news. Direct competition or indirect competition our response is still the same.
If your association is having a tough time generating enough great ideas, it may be because people are protecting their idea babies. Once you select an idea for development and launch, you may notice some peaks and valleys in the innovation team’s mood as the project progresses.

In my experience, there are a growing number of learning leaders at associations thinking in this way, but few have implemented a vision that is visible to their members and prospective members. The average associationvalue proposition still tends to be “pay us money so that you can belong and get discounts.”
