Last week, I was teaching the volunteer management course for ASAE’s Association Management Week with the smart and talented Andrea Rutledge (Executive Director of the National Architectural Accrediting Board), and she and I got chatting about membership recruitment. What are you doing to “recruit the whole person”?
Nominating someone is simple and anonymous: submit their contact info and a sentence about them—the AWTC awards committee takes it from there. Conference/event evaluations. Committee management. Have you ever had training to be a committee staff liaison or did it go something like this? Ok, and then what?
Every association is unique—that old saying is true and you can really see it in membership committees. Some associations can’t live without theirs, some got rid of theirs years ago, and some wonder what to do with their membership committee. If you’ve had an uneasy feeling about your membership committee, you are not alone.

The ERA is the membership body for those carrying executive research to support the senior recruitment process. It is a fairly niche organisation and it lead by a volunteer committee of members.
