Membership is perhaps the most sacred tenet in all of association orthodoxy. Indeed, for many organizations, the membership imperative defines the very existence of the association: membership is who they are and what they do. In a time of relentless societal transformation, however, the impact of forces beyond our control makes it necessary for us to question all of our most deep-seated beliefs, including our beliefs about membership.

Jamie Notter recently recapped his notes from the MIX Mashup , an invitation-only conference on the future of work, or, to quote their website: "What will it take to make our organizations highly adaptable, endlessly inventive, truly inspiring, and genuinely accountable?" Chanel suits are fashion iconography. A Chanel suit is the prototypical dream clothing acquisition : stylish, simple, elegant, and timeless. Or, to quote Marshall Goldsmith: "What Got You Here Wont Get You There.". Ive been thinking a lot about the long-term prospects of associations recently.
