I wonder if we are playing a national game of Prisoner’s Dilemma or the variation I often use in leadership workshops, Win As Much As You Can (WAMAYC). Both exercises explore game theory, collaborative or competitive mindsets, and decision-making and group dynamics. In WAMAYC four teams of individuals make a simple choice each round: X or Y. Scoring is determined by the distribution of choices among the four teams.
Wow - yesterday’s post about thank you notes and the lack thereof got the conversation started! Thanks to everyone who took the time to add some thoughts to the debate. Several people mentioned that the practical realities of nonprofit management mean that getting thank-you notes out promptly, especially when donations come through non-traditional channels for your organization, can be difficult.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

When the venerable Fieldstone Alliance surprised its readers this week with 25 Random Things that Make the Nonprofit Sector Great , picking up on a popular fad that’s been making the rounds of Facebook, it was a strong hint to take a closer look at that odd phenomenon of online culture, the meme. What’s a meme? An internet meme (pronounced meem ), at its most basic, is any idea or scrap of content that spreads voluntarily from person to person across the Web.
In August 2008, Facebook had 100 million users. According to a March 29 New York Times article , that number will have doubled one day this week. That's a significant milestone tor each in only five years. We used to talk about the digital divide in terms of people being online/offline. Given the penetration and pervasiveness of the Internet that's probably not much of a useful distinction any longer.
I’ve heard from several nonprofits lately who are only sending their 4-8 page print newsletters to their supporters twice a year. They wish they were sending it more often, but they just can’t make it happen because of time or budget constraints. My response: What’s the point? Updating your supporters twice a year on your work is not often enough to keep them engaged in what you do and top of mind when they consider contributing time or money.
Wes Trochlil pointed me to an article in which he was quoted that has suffered from round trip machine translation. The original article was in English, translated to something else and then back to English in this version. According to the article now, Wes has received his first naval commission, becoming Admiral of Effective Database Management. Round trip machine translation such as this exaggerates the errors but shows very well why automated translation simply doesn’t cut it for criti

Meditated Momentum. On associations, technology, parenting, people, meditation, and America. Thursday, March 26, 2009. Jonathan Livingston Seagull. OK, Ive read Jonathan Livingston Seagull maybe 20 times in the last 30 years. And Ive always loved it. But reading the blurb on the back, much as I wanted to be one of the "people who know theres more to this whole living thing than meets the eye", I was more the type that would just "simply escape into delightful adventure about freedom and flight".

Idealist.org and Reddit.com have just announced the launch of IdealistNews.com, a “social news” service where users submit and vote on “timely and important news of remarkable things happening in the nonprofit world.” What makes these services interesting and useful is that they’re great at bringing fresh and relevant news to people’s attention. News often appears at a social news site faster than through traditional media outlets.
In volleyball, the setter plays a critical role coordinating the team's offense and directing which teammate will actually attack the ball for the score. We also have setters in working relationships. Example: A local association asked me to speak at an upcoming luncheon and I accepted. After providing marketing copy for my talk, I was surprised to discover the actual event promo substantially modified it without my input.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
I’ve seen lots of interest from nonprofits in using video to communicate with supporters about their causes, along with an equal amount of trepidation about how to do it. I’m not a video expert, but I know several people who are, so I put out a call over Twitter for some guest posts to share with you. I’m expecting several more, but I’ll share two that have come in some far: Steve Braker of Worthwhile Films | Nonprofit Media posted some do-it-yourself video tips on Faceb
After attending a session on new postal regulations regarding upkeep of mailing lists and new increases in postage, I know exactly what the phrase - 'going postal' means. I also know that once everyone figures out how it will all impact their bottom line, they will be 'going postal' too. Here's the scoop - your mailing lists have to be run through new USPO software that will check addresses for accuracy.

Meditated Momentum. On associations, technology, parenting, people, meditation, and America. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Empathy and Associations. Well, of course. Empathy, that ability to recognize and respond to how others are feeling, is key to market research in associations. We are member driven. Trying to be vigilant about eating whole grains whose nutrition hasn't been refined and processed away can require a lot of efforts some days. First off, much of what manufacturers use as marketing hooks on their packaging is incomplete or misleading. Whether it be greenwashing of supposedly eco -friendly products or " grainwashing " of goods that aren't quite what's being presented, truth in advertising isn't quite being followed.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. I was at a board meeting this week, where everyone was looking around the table at each other wondering what we could do to raise more money for the organization. I couldn’t help but think about the webinar we are hosting here at Nonprofit Marketing Guide on Monday on starting a planned giving program — where you ask your supporters to include your cause in their retirement and estate plans, creating a much more stable, long-term source of revenue.
