Association lobbyists: Congress is kicking our butts when it comes to social media

Association Advocacy Chick

Say what you will about Congress. You can’t deny that the institution has embraced some form of social media. Members of Congress have their own Facebook pages. Congressional committees use Twitter to promote upcoming hearings. The House and Senate have their own YouTube channels. A few are even creating their own app. However, as association lobbyists, are we using those same tools to promote our advocacy efforts to our members?

I'm just a bill. No, not the Schoolhouse Rock song. Although I should now wish you good luck on getting that tune out of your brain. I'm talking about the financial kind of bill, specifically the dues invoice or "membership renewal." My American Society of Association Executives membership renewal just arrived. As bills go, it's good enough. It's easy to read and understand, and updating my information and preferences is pretty simple.

Why this advocacy chick has her CAE

Association Advocacy Chick

A few years ago, I was talking to a colleague about ASAE when the topic of the CAE came up. When asked if I was going to sit for the exam, I said no. At the time, I didn’t feel I needed to. I didn’t think it would enhance my career. I saw myself as a lobbyist, not an association executive. I’ve had similar conversations with a few of my government relations colleagues who question their need to earn the CAE.

Great Presenters Don't Rely On Recipes

Idea Architects

When I first started cooking, I relied heavily on recipes from trusted cookbooks. Methodically following the instructions, I was able to produce impressive meals. Slowly, I started to tweak recipes to meet my own preferences, adding a bit more of this, a little less of that. As my confidence in my judgment improved, I began to change recipes significantly or create dishes just by assembling what seemed like a good mix of ingredients.

You have an idea about something- phones or whatever- and you build a product as an expression of that idea." —Hugh MacLeod, Gaping Void I like this thinking a lot. Recognition Powers High-Performance — If You Do it Right

Speaker: Radhika Samant and Todd Wuestenberg

Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. While we understand its importance, we tend to associate recognition with intangible outcomes like engagement and sentiment, rather than direct impacts on retention and high performance. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
