Back in the mid-1990s (so, in Internet time, 500 years ago), I was a member of a thriving online community on the Runner’s World website. We shared training regimens, asked each other questions, told race stories, got injury and gear advice, told stupid jokes, gave each other a lot of s**t, got into arguments and then made up, and generally had a ball. “Wait!

Google Reader is where I go first thing in the morning for my professional reads about associations, marketing, digital media, technology, etc., and at the end of the day for my personal reads about food, culture, etc. I have hundreds of RSS subscriptions in dozens of Reader folders. Yes, I find a lot to read on Twitter, but its randomness, although appreciated, is no substitute for Reader.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.

I met a leadership lover recently. Her name is Ann Tardy. She has a great story – the short of it is after successfully practicing corporate law, she discovered she had a passion for leadership and mentoring. She stepped away from her law career to become a leadership and mentoring trainer and consultant. The story is much deeper than this and you can find out more about Ann at her website.

Last week, I was in the process of signing a new client. We’re moving fast, because they need the main piece of the project done and ready to share with their Board at the end of April. So we’re working on formalizing the relationship (aka “contracting and billing”) at the same time as we’re getting started on the actual work.

Every time I see the word media in this post by Jeff Jarvis, I think associations. He talks about media’s business model : “building a pay wall around content because content is valuable, damnit.” And then says, “I’ve been arguing to media that relationships are more valuable. Knowing people because you have their trust and give them value builds a rich and deep relationship — builds data about that relationship — that can be far more valuable for far longer than a mere transaction.

It’s been several months now, but I was invited by Bryan L. Crenshaw, southeast zone adviser of the Michigan District of Key Club International, to present two breakout sessions on public speaking and confidence building at the organization’s 2012 Fall Rally in Wayland. As a former club president and district board member, I was eager to give back to this next generation of leaders and (fingers crossed) association professionals.

If they don’t think of you, they won’t volunteer. If your event doesn’t come to mind, they won’t attend. If your conferences are not on their calendar, they’ll go elsewhere. If they don’t know what you do for them, they won’t renew their dues. If your private online community is not part of their daily Internet ritual, you won’t see them there.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

If you ask a group of kindergarteners if they can sing, dance, draw, paint, act, etc., every single one of them will raise her hand. If you ask that same group if they can read or do math, you might get a few hands, but largely, no. This post originally appeared on the Associations Now Leadership Blog on March 7, 2013. In a recent post , Associations Now blogger Joe Rominiecki shared what both he and I regard as a startling fact: 53 percent of associations surveyed in 2011 had raised their dues in the previous three years. To put it another way, during the most severe economic decline in most of our lifetimes, more than half of associations surveyed still moved forward with a dues increase.

Last fall, I had the opportunity to participate in The Boondoggle. Organized by Joe Gerstand t and Jason Lauritsen , it provided an opportunity for 10 people who didn’t know each other to sit in a cabin outside Omaha for 2 1/2 days and think and talk deeply about the future of work. By the afternoon of day two, we’d pretty much all gotten past the posturing, and we were finally getting real.

I read an interesting article the other day about leadership. The article got me to think about my role as a leader in a different way than I previously had. Often we fall into the rut of thinking of leaders as “the boss” or “the manager” As managers, we encourage the rut by judging and criticizing the actions of our team without regard for how that judgement might affect the team as a whole.

Go ogle Alerts have been around for a number of years, but they are still a great way for membership organisations to search and monitor news information. What is a Google Alert? A Google Alert is a search that is performed by Google based on search criteria you have set and the results are then emailed to you. They typically search news sites and blogs.
