We focus a lot on membership sales in my association. This year perhaps more than at any time in recent memory because we have identified increasing our membership numbers as our Wildly Important Goal for the year. In true 4DX fashion, we're trying to engage the whole organization in a concentrated effort on identifying membership leads and recruiting them in as members.
Email is ridiculously important to the health of our association because at most associations email is by far the most used channel to communicate with our members. But email is in trouble! I am not going to address deliverability (although that is a problem). We are not going to talk all the new filters that purposely block and sort association mass emails into spam folders (that’s a problem too).

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.
Associations and nonprofits are always trying to make more of an impact with less – less money, less staff, less resources. It’s made them some of the more creative and efficient organizations we’ve ever seen. But there’s still one piece of software you may not be using at full capacity: your volunteer management platform. Volunteer tools are standard for associations and nonprofits, and they can be used for much more than just standard volunteer tasks.

Strategic planning is a standard exercise at many, if not most, associations/nonprofit organizations. So much so that many smart people mindlessly use it as a prescription for all organizational ills: “Having problems, eh? Do you have a strategic plan? If you do, when was the last time you looked at it?” — as if the only reason why an organization is struggling is because it doesn’t have a strategic plan or isn’t using it.

They say to "never build on rented land," but is that always true? And, if this is the case, why do we continue to put our personal and business' intellectual property on public platforms owned by third parties? In the wake of GDPR and the great Facebook controversy of 2018 ( when 87 million users' data was collected without consent ), this is a great time to think about where you store your data, how you can maintain full control over it, and what improvements can be made to make your members f
The MCI Group recently released the American Engagement Index 2017 (the link takes you to a page where you can enter your contact information to get your own copy, and you really should). There’s lots of interesting information in there, but one thing jumped out at me (and Associations Now ‘s Tim Ebner), in part because I’ve seen this issue in many of my clients: disengaged (or, using Tim’s term, “passive” ) experienced members.

Do you feel like giving your learning platform a heave-ho out the door? But you can’t, not yet anyways. As dysfunctional and frustrating as that old learning management system (LMS) is, your association still relies upon it. But, let’s face it, your current LMS is holding you back. Maybe it wasn’t designed for associations in the first place. Or, it doesn’t have the functionality to allow your online learning business to grow.
Everyone has a smartphone these days. That’s why many clubs and associations are switching from paper-printed membership cards (which are a big waste!) to digital membership cards.
How often are you looking at your membership management metrics? At my last association, we looked at metrics every day. Have you ever come across the expression: “content is king”? Of course you have – most of us have seen this a lot in the last few years (because it’s true) and that probably won’t change any time soon. Everyone knows “the way we’ve always done it” is not usually the best way to move forward.
