Yesterday I attended a workshop organized by one of my favorite bloggers (and NTC roomie) Nancy Schwartz on how you deal with branding issues for your organization within social media. The panel featured Danielle Brigida, National Wildlife Federation; Felicia Carr, National Parks Conservation Association; and Wendy Harman, American Red Cross. Nancy created a wonderful guide to the session (Word doc) that contains even more great stories and tips than came out in the live event, so download that.
Many people spend much of their day marketing themselves through blatant self-promotional messages as if to say: "Look at me. Hire me." Much of what they share is about them and what they can do for you. Fair enough. But other people spend their day making meaningful and timely intellectual contributions to their profession, ones that others find valuable and that cause them to sit up and take notice.

Off Stage. Apr. 13, 2009 - How to Use Twitter: A Guide for AEs. Recently I’ve been working on some social media/marketing presentations for Realtors, and I’ve gotten involved in the whole online networking scene. I reviewed the proposed new Social Marketing course from Internet Crusade, as well—it’s going to be very helpful to our members, I think (should be released soon!).
Digital Now’s annual conference last week, as always, wonderfully captured the spirit of the association community, and its love/hate affair with technology. There was no need to persuade people that social media will be the media of the future, nor of the idea that social media is the modern expression of the association’s core purpose. That’s been done.

Ten years ago, Rick Levine, Christopher Locke, Doc Searls, and David Weinberger laid out 95 principles for communicating with customers online. The Cluetrain Manifesto , sounded a visionary wake-up call that the Internet would change — was already changing — the fundamental nature of the relationship between businesses and their markets. Parts of the book are nothing short of brilliant, while other passages still have us shaking our heads in confusion about the intended meaning, a full decade la
When we talk about fundraising through social media (and we had many of these conversations at 09NTC this week), the discussion always turns to how we should go about converting into long-term donors those friends of friends - people who gave to the cause because a friend of theirs and an existing supporter of ours (let’s call her the “Original Fan&# ) asked them to.
Comparisons are meant to help us make choices. But if the same quality or criteria isn't behind the items being compared, the choice is a false one. Example: I'm always a bit perplexed when people say original art is too expensive, that they would never pay $500 for even a large painting. It's because we use a different baseline for comparison. They use "things you hang on a wall" and I use "originality and long-term value.

Off Stage. Apr. 22, 2009 - The New Association. A major change in the Obama administration has been the appointment of two positions to his leadership team: the Chief Technology Officer, and the Chief Information Officer. These positions have been closely watched in Washington, although with our national fixation on the economy, little recognition seems to have been made in the remainder of the nation.
As my association has been slowly edging into the social networking world, there are a few things that have become very clear. First , this endeavor is (and will continue to be) more costly and harder to pull off than originally expected. It seems with the free tools and endless supply of people who are able to use them, that content would be cheap and plentiful and experts would be everywhere.
Technology can make it much more convenient for people to follow through on pledges and donations, but what motivates donors to reach for their wallets or credit cards in the first place? What’s in it for your donors? Rewards for donation may be tangible (discounts, gifts, access to special events, etc. - anything that can be assigned a monetary value) or intangible (the good feeling that comes with doing good, for example, or fulfilling the need to contribute to a cause that has personal meanin

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
The current issue of Inc. magazine has a great interview with noted business author Jim Collins. One of the many succinct observations he offers is that people often confuse risk with uncertainty, particularly when talking about entrepreneurship. "As an entrepreneur, you know what the risks are. You see them. You understand them. You manage them. If you join someone else's company, you may not know those risks, and not because they don't exit.
A story is making the rounds about a Swiss woman who was fired by her employer after they saw her active on Facebook while she had told them she was too ill to work with a computer and stayed home. Regardless of the facts of the story above, it does illustrate a new dynamic that we are all wrestling with as a society: how to balance our personal, private, and professional identities online.
Health care associations have had their hands full this week, gathering and disseminating the latest on the swine flu outbreak in the U.S. It’s moments like this when associations prove their worth – in times of urgency, if not crisis. The flu’s outbreak in the country occurred last week in Texas, where the Texas Medical Association acted quickly to alert its members about what had happened.
What makes social media technology powerful? One might be quick to conclude that the power is rooted in the social media applications themselves. After all, the mass-user applications provide the platform which enables interaction to take place on multiple levels. . However, I believe the true power of social media is in the minds of its users. I’ll say it again, I believe the true power of social media is in the minds of its users.

I’m working right now at my favorite Indy café. The décor is unique and visually interesting. The food features local and organic ingredients in refreshing combinations. The staff is eager to serve and always smiling. The seating is varied and conducive to quiet conversations as well as gregarious group gatherings. And the music? completely wrong. What’s the missing piece in what you’re doing right now?
Off Stage. Apr. 26, 2009 - The Internal Blog: A Management Tool. The use of blogs for promotion of the association to the public is a generally accepted tool. In our organization newsletters these blogs were often called “A Word from the President”, or perhaps “From the AEs Desk” (the subtle distinction here being that the President got to talk about the big stuff (state of the economy or association legislative initiatives) and the AE got to talk about more clerical matt

I’ve been a bit stunned by the recent events between the U.S. and Cuba. President Obama lightened up some restrictions and Raul Castro made statements that they are willing to talk and everything is on the table. It still may not come to pass but it’s a bit more feasible today that trade and travel may open up significantly between the two countries.
While there are many elements which comprise an overall association social media strategy, there is one which in my mind stands above all others. That element is creativity. I’ll believe creativity is the single factor which will ensure the success of all other factors. . The social web offers a world of limitless possibilities and opportunities for all types of assocations and organizations.

Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. It’s frightening nowadays to be or do anything less than perfect. In an instant your faux pas can be YouTubed and Twittered to thousands upon thousands of people. Just witness the almost instant calls to boycott Amazon.com this past weekend. I returned late last week from the DigitalNow Conference , which is an event that brings together association leaders to discuss what is happening in the digital age, and more importantly what is happening to associations in light of that change.
