When getting my rental car at the Budget counter on Sunday, I saw a sign posted essentially advertising this: "If you rental involves less than 75 miles, we will automatically charge you $10.50 for gas upon your return. This charge will be removed upon presentation of a receipt for gas purchased." While I might have phrased this differently to stress the customer benefits it offers (the second line could be said in a more positive way), I think the actual idea/service is brilliant.

You can almost hear William Shatner's voice saying those words at the opening of each Star Trek episode, can't you? Our daily lives operate in worlds that are increasingly filled with visual and audio distractions cluttering the landscape. Cellphones have made once semi-private spaces highly public and in a tribute to capitalism, we seem willing to place advertising everywhere.

I think just about every high school organization I was involved in at some point had us selling sausage and cheese as a fundraiser, but I'm not about to revisit those days. I do, however, hope to visit the inaugural Visual Thinking Conference for three days in San Francisco in January 2008. Sessions will address topics such as those listed in the graphic to the left.

Reopened after a long period of renovation is the home to many of Monet's Water Lillies paintings, Musee de L'Orangerie. They are simply spectacular and when you enter each of the two galleries containing them you feel as if you have stepped directed into a filed of flowers.

For the next week or two, I'm going to be sharing several thoughts gleaned from a few days spent recently in Paris. Visit a breakfast buffet at a Parisian hotel and you get this: elegant platters of wafer-thin slices of melon and small bowls containing fresh berries and citrus fruits. Every item on the buffet is artfully displayed in small dishes and containers.
