Lately I've been in quite a few conversations with people bemoaning the slow idea approval process in their organizations or how easily one or two people can block what others might see as an innovation worth pursuing. So I'm thinking the best way to try and circumvent this all too frequent reality is upending the idea approval process. What I propose is an automatic green light for ANY idea that meets a short list of predetermined criteria.

It's been many, many years since Starbucks arrived here in Indianapolis, but I remember the announcement well. The press coverage suggested this was yet another sign that we were a vibrant city playing in the big leagues (ironic now I know given the ubiquity of the chain). You've no doubt heard the news that Starbucks is closing 600+ of its US retail outlets.

Al Gore's challenge to have 100% of our electricity come from "renewable resources and carbon-constrained fuels within the next 10 years" has provoked many a can't be done comment. Here's the reaction though that is really worth remembering: "But that's the thing about visionaries. They don't imagine what's easy. They imagine the benefits to be reaped once all the obstacles are overcome.

In the August issue of Esquire (not yet online), Chris Rock credits Eddie Murphy for telling others that "This guy's (Rock) kind of funny." Rock goes on to describe the value of what Murphy said: "That definitely made people give me that first look. You need that first look." The first look. The foot in the door. The opportunity to shine. People have always benefited from others' help in getting noticed, but it may be even more critical now since we live in the era of Chris Anderson's The L

"I honestly feel a large part of the reason we are successful is we had no idea what we're doing and spent no time trying to figure it out. Our whole inspiration is, Are we having fun doing it? Is what we are doing exciting us? Is what we are doing continuing to motivate us? If any of those die out, I guess we do not necessarily do it anymore." I've been in a few meetings recently where association staff members spoke of their employer as if it was "their" professional association and volunteer board members who acted as if their seats on the board are something they own in perpetuity. Nothing unusual about either of these circumstances, and I believe almost all of the people involved are good people with good intentions.

Among all the ways we can slice and dice others with whom we share this world, recent travels have led me to place other hotel guests into one of three categories: Those who carefully close their room's door so it doesn't make unnecessary noise. Those who don't realize doors often slam on their own, but begin closing the door carefully once they learn how much noise they make.

The flight status board in the airport is the equivalent of a mood ring, albeit a limited one. At Indianapolis International Airport, flights are displayed in two colors: green indicates on time arrivals and departures while red is used to indicate delays. Upon arriving yesterday at the airport, I took a quick glance at the board only to be greeted by a sea of red screaming at me: delays delays, delays.

Before you read this, please understand: while my post may seem unrelated to associations, from the outset, it is definitely related to associations and their ability to change the world. I find it simultaneously interesting and deeply depressing to hear both Democrats and Republicans try to blame one another for the rising prices of energy.

Employee recognition has often been deemed a "feel-good" initiative, tied closely to rewards. In today’s workplace, the true ROI of recognition lies in its ability to regenerate tangible, business-driven results.
