There is a mountain of data languishing unanalyzed, from the attendee chat record at virtual conferences to the member contributions to online communities to even the video from chapter meetings. No longer are events, communities, and meetings just benefits. They are powerful ways to get insights into our members’ world.
To protect the anonymity of this association I can’t tell you everything we learned but I can tell you about a few of the key insights gained: Influence is a key challenge for members – members worried about their ability to influence stakeholders and like most professionals this is becoming a more important part of their job.
Slow data is the data we accumulate after talking to members at event after event after event, by job shadowing or in member phone interviews. When you have seemingly unanswerable questions about members it is slow data that holds the answer. Related posts: Please ask members. Slow data is different.
In the old days of in-person events, the information exchanged in breakout groups was mostly effervescent. Better yet, these conversations may sometimes unearth many little solutions for a big problem vexing the profession, industry, or field and with a little amplification, can help other members who are struggling too.
